(July 2005) One of NexCare Collaborative’s biggest successes to date has been its outreach to the Latino population of Southern California. Some quick facts about this population:

    • 46.20% of all Los Angeles County residents are Latino

    • This percentage will grow to more than 60% before
       the year 2050

    • 31% (1,321,967) of all L.A. County Latinos have
       no health insurance

    • 80% of the uninsured children in L.A. County are Latino

    • 61% of all live births in L.A. County are Latino

Since mid-2003, NexCare Collaborative has become very involved in the Latino subculture of Southern California, to the extent that it has:

    • Reached-out and assisted more than one-in-ten of all Latino families with children ages 0-5
       within Los Angeles County

    • Helped enroll more than 18,000 children in free-or-low-cost health insurance programs,
the vast majority (over 87%) being Latino

    • Assisted more than 100,000 children (over 80% of which were Latino)

Reading at an early age
Telemundo reporter Salvador Duran interviews a young reader and NexCare Collaborative’s Dr. Pejman Salimpour regarding NexCare’s “Reading Connection” literacy program.

This could not have been accomplished without NexCare’s ongoing relationship with Telemundo (the NBC network’s huge, international Latino network of television stations). In the Los Angeles area, the key Telemundo station is KVEA-TV, Channel 52.

On a weekly basis, reporters from Telemundo’s news programs visit NexCare Collaborative’s Call Center to conduct live, remote broadcasts during the station’s early morning and evening news telecasts. They strongly urge viewers to phone NexCare Collaborative’s inbound phone number, 1-800-211-5672, in order to:

    • Obtain free or low-cost health insurance for their children

    • Gain health care knowledge and information affecting the lives of their family

    • Have access to potential referrals to more than 17,000 healthcare and social service agencies throughout
Southern California that can assist families in a multitude of ways

    • Learn the most updated information about the availability of vaccines and immunizations for vulnerable children

These newscasts often reach audiences exceeding 300,000 viewers per broadcast.
