Bird Flu

  • The Bird Flu is caused by a virus called Avian influenza A

  • Avian influenza A viruses do not usually infect humans.  There have been reported cases in Asia of humans being infected.  It is believed that the infection resulted from contact with infected poultry or contaminated surfaces.

  • Symptoms range from fever, cough, sore throat, muscle aches, eye infections, to acute respiratory distress.

  • The Centers for Disease Control advises that travelers to countries in Asia with documented outbreaks should avoid poultry farms, contact with animals in live food markets, and any surfaces that appear to be contaminated with feces from poultry or other animals.
